Todays Markets was a rollercoaster?

Market was a rollercoaster today! Luckily I couldn’t trade anyway with all the craziness (and other commitments), but some of my holdings are definitely in the red. But I’m curious, does everyone lose money in a downturn, or can some folks make profits by riding the waves?

Hey Roshan,
We can classify market participants into two distinct buckets, ie. Investors & Traders.
In market conditions like today, Investors are inevitably bound to lose money because investors can create wealth for themselves only if the markets go up.
However, traders are a different breed of market participants. They can go long as well as short. So traders who have gone short today (which means sell first and buy later) would have most likely made money and traders who have gone long would have most likely lost money.

To sum it up, Investors and Long-based traders would have lost money and Short-based traders would have made money

Market went down today, so some of my stuff is worth less . But that’s okay, it happens sometimes. Maybe tomorrow will be better..

Not everyone loses money in a market downturn. Some traders can make profits by riding the waves through strategies like short selling (betting against stocks), trading options, or by buying stocks at lower prices and selling them when they bounce back. Additionally, some investors might hold diversified portfolios, including assets like bonds or gold that may perform better during downturns, helping them mitigate losses. So, while many might see losses, others can find opportunities to gain.

Market was bearish as the expectations of the exit poll was not met. I was skeptical initially and sold small qty of call options however later brought large qty of puts and made 15% returns on my capital.

Bearish markets can be challenging for investors, but they can also present opportunities for those who are prepared. Strategies such as hedging, diversification, or investing in defensive sectors can help mitigate losses during bearish phases and potentially profit from market downturns

Yesterday’s markets definitely seem to have taken investors on a wild ride! Market volatility can create both challenges and opportunities for investors. During downturns, it’s common for many holdings to be in the red, as overall market sentiment tends to be negative. However, some investors, particularly those who are skilled in navigating market fluctuations, may indeed find ways to profit by taking advantage of the ups and downs.
