Lead | Market Views & Discussions

Lead lives mostly inside batteries, and it is usually the calmest of the base metals. This guide covers the contracts, what drives the price and the risks to know before you trade.

Lead quick facts

Lead in 30 seconds

Most of the world’s lead goes into lead-acid batteries for cars, two-wheelers, inverters and backup power. Much of the supply comes from recycling old batteries, so lead moves less with mining news than other metals. MCX lead is quoted in rupees per kg and follows the London Metal Exchange (LME) price, adjusted for the USD/INR rate and local costs. It is usually the calmest of the base metals. In 2026, it traded between $1,797 and $2,040 per tonne on the LME.

Contract snapshot

Contract Lot size Price quoted per Value of a ₹1 move Value of one tick Expiry day Settlement
Lead 5 tonnes 1 kg ₹5,000.00 ₹250.00 Last calendar day of the month Eligible for delivery
Lead Mini 1 tonne 1 kg ₹1,000.00 ₹50.00 Last calendar day of the month Eligible for delivery
  • Trading hours: 9:00 AM to 11:30 PM while US daylight saving is on. From 2 Nov 2026, trading runs until 11:55 PM.
  • Tick size: ₹0.05 per kg on both contracts.
  • Expiry months: Monthly contracts. If the last day is a holiday, expiry moves to the previous working day. The October 2026 contracts expire on 30 Oct 2026.
  • Delivery: Positions open in the last three trading days (the tender period) can be marked for delivery. Most brokers ask you to exit before the tender period starts.
  • Contract value: At ₹193.60 per kg (30 Sep 2026), one Lead lot was worth about ₹9.7 lakh. One Lead Mini lot was worth about ₹1.9 lakh.
  • Margin: At least 10% of contract value, or the SPAN margin if higher, plus an extreme-loss margin of at least 1%.
  • Options: Not available on lead at present.

What moves the lead price

  1. Battery demand. Car, two-wheeler and inverter batteries use most of the world’s lead. Vehicle sales and replacement demand matter most.
  2. Recycling. Old batteries supply a large share of lead. Scrap availability can add or remove supply quickly.
  3. China. China is the largest producer and user. Smelter curbs or a squeeze on Chinese smelters can lift prices.
  4. Exchange stocks. LME lead stocks were 3,57,350 tonnes on 30 Sep 2026, a sign of ample supply.
  5. Fund positions. When funds hold large bets on falling prices, a short squeeze can push prices up fast.
  6. The rupee and the dollar. A weaker rupee lifts MCX prices. A weaker dollar usually lifts the LME price.

Lead over five years

End of LME cash price ($ per tonne) What happened
2021 2,329 Post-Covid recovery in vehicle demand; high of $2,504 in August
2022 2,335 Brief spike to $2,513 in March, low of $1,754 in September
2023 2,031 Market moved into surplus as stocks rose
2024 1,922 Weak demand, rising stocks; prices stayed below $2,300
2025 1,962 Range-bound; combined LME stocks climbed above 4,40,000 tonnes
30 Sep 2026 1,856 High of $2,040 in January, low of $1,797 in July; heavy fund selling

On 30 Sep 2026, MCX lead (October contract) closed at ₹193.60 per kg.

What to watch each month

Data or event Why it matters
LME and SHFE stock reports Large stocks keep a lid on prices. Sharp draws can spark rallies.
ILZSG monthly balance The International Lead and Zinc Study Group reports whether the market is in surplus or deficit.
Vehicle sales Car and two-wheeler sales drive new battery demand.
Chinese smelter news Curbs or shutdowns in China are the main upside risk.
Chinese holidays SHFE shuts for Lunar New Year and the National Day week, which can thin trading.

Where lead is used

  • Batteries: starter batteries in cars and two-wheelers, inverter and UPS batteries.
  • Telecom and data centres: backup power for towers and servers.
  • Radiation shielding: hospitals and laboratories.
  • Cable sheathing and alloys: some power cables, solder and ammunition.

How to read lead alongside other markets

  • Lead flat while other metals rally: normal, as lead depends more on batteries than on construction.
  • Lead up, rupee down: part of the MCX rise is currency, not the LME price. Compare with LME lead to separate the two.
  • Lead and zinc together: they are often mined together, so mine news can affect both.

Risks to know

  • Leverage: one Lead lot was worth about ₹9.7 lakh on 30 Sep 2026, so small moves mean large profits or losses.
  • Thin trading: lead trades far less than copper or zinc, so orders can move the price.
  • Overnight gaps: LME and SHFE trade while Indian markets are shut.
  • Expiry and delivery: lead contracts end in compulsory delivery. Exit or roll over before the tender period if you don’t want the metal.

Quick FAQs

What is the difference between Lead and Lead Mini? Lead is 5 tonnes per lot. Lead Mini is 1 tonne, so it needs about a fifth of the margin.

Why does lead move less than other metals? Recycling supplies much of its metal, and battery demand is steady, so swings tend to be smaller.

Do I need a separate account to trade lead futures? No, but you need the commodity segment activated. In the FYERS app, go to Profile, then Segments, activate Commodity, upload income proof (such as your latest ITR, 6 months’ bank statement or 3 months’ salary slips) and e-sign with Aadhaar OTP.
