Introducing School of Stocks

Financial literacy in India is abysmally low. The vast majority of Indians have little to no awareness of even the basic concepts of the stock markets, investing or trading. According to a recent S&P research report, up to 3/4th of Indian adults do not understand the basic financial concepts and less than 3 percent of the population has ever invested in the stock markets. This is because the education system in India has completely shunned stock markets as a subject altogether. As a result, the majority of the savings in India are funneled into real estate, fixed deposits, and gold in the form of jewelry. This is despite a healthy stock market and well regulated financial instruments.

In my strong opinion, stock market education should begin in high school so that teenagers are aware of the system and will be in a better position to get started once they reach adulthood. It will also give them more confidence to invest in various financial instruments. The earlier it is taught to youngsters, the more impact it will have on the future. Currently, even commerce degrees such as BBM, BCOM, and MBA don’t focus as much on the stock markets and the basics taught in such courses are excessively theoretical and only touch the surface. When I was a high-school student, I didn’t have any guidance or resources to learn about the markets. I had to compile bits & pieces of information from various sources to form my own understanding. In college, I signed up for BBM with a specialization in Finance (From a reputed institution), but was barely taught anything about stock markets. At the time, I found it to be very amusing. I later did a postgraduate course in Finance & Investments but then realized that what was being taught was far-stretched from reality. From my experiences, I strongly believe that stock market education and general awareness about trading & investing ought to improve significantly in our country.

School Of Stocks’ is our initiative to help increase financial literacy with a focus on educating readers on the Indian capital markets, trading & investments.

    • Avatar karan says:

      pls reply

      • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

When you sell shares from your Demat account, it will be blocked in your account on the same day. For instance, if you have bought on T day and sold on T+5, the shares will be blocked from your demat account on that very day and will be debited the next day for DP process.

  • Avatar pratham says:

Sir is can shorts be held overnight ,In cash segment ?

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Hi Pratham, Shorts cannot be held overnight in the cash segment. You can however short using derivatives in the following ways:
      1. Short futures (The best alternative)
      2. Buy Put Options (Requires lesser margins)
      3. Short Call Options (Bearish options strategy and a limited profitability strategy. Requires similar margins as futures).

  • Avatar AJ says:

Can you please do something about user preference about charts and trading are getting reset every time. Also open in a new popup chart doesn’t use the chart preference. Please fix this, tell your devs to save the preference in blob or something and then retrieve it and cache it. Also there is no sync between web and mobile in many things like watchlist etc. These are basic user experience requirement. Why are you not looking into it?

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Hi AJ. That’s strange. Which platform are you referring to? Yes, there is no sync between platforms but we will be taking that up post our current projects. We have been working on a couple of feature requests on Fyers Web. Hopefully, the first phase will be launched next week.

      • Avatar Dhiraj Singh says:

No doubt FYERS WEB is a good trading platform but you should urgently look after introducing some basic features in FYERS WEB.
        1. Total bid and Total ask quantity at any point of time.(as it helps a trader to see the balance of demand and supply )
        2 . Ability to trade from a POP-OUT chart.

      • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

        Thanks Dhiraj.

        1. It will be done.
        2. We deliberately removed it. This is to ensure that the system is simple.

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

The one thing that is properly synced are the charts on Fyers Web & Mobile as of now. This is FYI.

  • Avatar Rohit says:

Can a equities swing trader get margin ?

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Hi Rohit, we don’t provide margins for overnight equity trades. Most retail swing traders trade using futures & options in India.

  • Avatar Jayashankar says:

I know this must be a stupid question to ask ..Im a beginner and I’m in search for the answer to this question sir money control shows in a column called only buyers signifying that there are a large amount of buyers for the particular stock here what i really don’t understand that for every buyer there shall be a seller therefore how is it possible for the buyers to be more than sellers … sir please elaborate on this .

  • Avatar Naresh Rajput says:

Sir I had a question to ask about the dom … I see some vids related to dom and I find a column attached to the side of it consists of histogram along with the number of contracts or shares traded at each price on the given day (some kind of a volume profile attached to the ladder ) sir what’s up with that can it be expected to be updated on the fyers dom because I’m am eager to learn about it I’m referring to the one on the left of the number of prices given . can it be expected to be updated on the fyers dom I don’t mean the volume profile as a whole but jus the one attached to the ladder as shown in the vid above

  • Avatar Pratham says:

Sir what is a footprint chart ? Please explain . Thanks .

  • Avatar Rohan says:

Tejas sir is there any chance that we traders can get current volume besides the price in the depth of the market

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

HI Rohan, In the current version of the web platform, Price ladder is the only place to get that information. However, we are working on something which will give you the same information in a traditional snap quote in the coming month or so. Stay tuned.

  • Avatar ajit says:

Sir what are some order flow tools in fyers besides DOM

  • Avatar Rahman says:

I really appreciate Fyers for providing this, it’s really helping me a lot.

  • Avatar Pratham says:

Sir what is a heat map ? I’ve been trying to learn it but not getting any results out of it

  • Avatar Jayesh says:

Tejas sir the price ladder seems so empty without volume profile

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Hi Jayesh, Since it is a paid indicator on TradingView, there is some reluctance to make it available to users on other platforms such as FYERS Web. However, we have been following up on this and have explained that it is a much-required feature on the platform. Hopefully, it sees the light of day soon.

  • Avatar Vishwas says:

Hi sir can u pls let me know what are the documents required for a 17 year old (i.e a minor ) to open a trading acc

  • Avatar Anant says:

It would be great if below the price ladder there would be total no of buyers and sellers during the day …well jus a sugg to make this excellent brokerage firm even better .

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Well, unfortunately, NSE data feed does not show the total number of buyers and sellers but rather, the total quantities.

  • Avatar Pratham says:

Are there any equity dark pools in India that can affect the order flow ? are there dark pools for futures ?

  • Avatar Pratham says:

Hello sir when can we expect volume profile to be updated

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Hi Pratham, We are on it and have communicated it with TradingView. Can’t commit on the timelines as we haven’t received any clarity yet.

  • Avatar mahesh says:

One of the great thought really helps the beginner who is keen in knowing the depth of the market.

  • Avatar Ajay Biswal says:

Hi Tejas, what makes this different from other such materials which are already available in abundance in India?

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Hi Ajay, The content. I am very passionate about increasing financial awareness in India. I have found other platforms to lack in several aspects so we are trying to educate people on the important aspects of trading and investing in the most useful way. • Avatar Samika says:

Hello, Could you elaborate a little on the various taxing policies for the money earned through trading.

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Taxes are a burden on the trading community. Under the current tax regime, we have the following taxes:

      1. Short Term Capital Gains Tax (STCG)
      2. Long Term Capital Gains Tax (LTCG)
      3. Tax on Speculative income (P&L from derivatives).
      4. Tax on business income (In case you trade through a company who’s business is to trade).
      5. Dividend Distribution Tax (Tax Free in the hands of the shareholder but paid on behalf of you by the company).
      6. Tax on Dividend income beyond Rs. 10 lacs per annum at 10%. This is really unfavorable for equity investors.
      7. Stamp Duties (This tax is levied by the state governments depending on which state you reside in).
      8. Securities Transaction Tax (STT) is levied on the turnover of every transaction.
      9. Goods & Services Tax (GST) is levied on the brokerage charges.

We’ll write about this in more detail in the future. Stay tuned 🙂

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Hi Rohan, for us to be able to provide 10 bid/asks, the exchange will have to provide us with the data first. Currently, the exchange provides level 2 data (Best 5 Bid/Asks). I hope they upgrade to level 3 or TBT soon.

  • Avatar Somil says:

  • Avatar AMIT KUMAR PANDEY says:

    tejas sir,
pls make videos on Advance technical analysis and techniques on youtube.
Videos make understanding complicated topics much easier than written notes and also in this way you would be able to monetize your videos and it will also help you to explain the advantages and high end features of fyers platform and attract new traders.

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Hey Amit, How are you? Currently, we are focusing on written content. Looking to educate people in a more detailed and systematic manner. We’ll see how it goes. Yeah, but sure we will make more videos about our platform soon. Thanks for your valuable feedback as usual.

  • Avatar Pratham says:

Is price laddering only for futures ? Or equities too ?

  • Avatar Souvik says:

Fyers is the next rising broker in India and also very much a competition to Zerodha and Upstox. To make a full switch, here are the things expected from Fyers. (#1) Get your own DP. I don’t trust IL&FS. (#2) Build a nice back-office. These are the 2 things that I need. Would appreciate if any timeframes could be shared with regards to the same.

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Hi Souvik! Thanks for your suggestions.

      1. We have already applied for the DP. We expect it to come in a quarter.
      2. Yes, we will take steps to move away from IL&FS soon.
      3. Back office will take some time.

  • Avatar Varsha Gowda says:

Really appreciate the efforts from Fyers for providing such valuable modules which will help in enhancing the knowledge of young traders. I am impressed by technical analysis. Although I appreciate ur efforts I am damn sure that education is time consuming. pls don’t lose focus from your platform. It’s more rocking than all your other initiatives so far.

  • Avatar Swaroop says:

The education platform will help a lot as the stock market investors are increasing day by day. Around 50% of the Indian population belongs to the age group between 20 to 30. In general younger people are more likely to invest as their risk appetite is higher than elder people.

  • Avatar Rishabh says:

Tejas + Gopal Duo! From Quora to School of stocks! Good work sir. I will surely share with friends.

  • Avatar Keshab Kumar says:

It is really a very good initiative from FYERS. Financial illiteracy is a major concern in India. It is a good thing that your company has come up with such a robust platform to make things bit easier for pro traders and young traders as well.

I am so eager to join Thanks for the initiative

  • Avatar Aashima Garg says:

Finally. I am new to the trading and I am still learning how to trade and I was searching for such modules from where I can read and do some analysis. Thanks to Fyers for updating such modules for the new traders.

  • Avatar Soorya says:

Educating public on stocks and markets is a really a great initiative. There is only 3% of Indian population knows about stocks . Rest of the population depending upon the other mode of investment gold , land , FD, but compare to these investment market has a greater potential of multifold return . I appreciate the way fyers spreads awareness and knowledge towards traders and investors community .

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Godspeed. Let’s see how it goes! We’re committed to helping increase awareness about trading & Investing.

  • Avatar Rohan says:

Education is completely lacking in our system.. nobody is aware of how to trade because we are not taught.. that s why retailers lose money. Thank u for this initiative

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Not taught, not encouraged and in fact most discouraged :-).

But don’t worry, we’ll do our best to spread the right kind of awareness.

  • Avatar Aurobindo Das says:

This would definitely be helpful for the ones who seek the basic on the stock market and wish to trade live. Good initiative Fyers!!
