Introducing Bracket Orders (Phase – 1)

I am happy to announce that we have introduced Bracket Orders on our trading platforms. After receiving a ton of feedback from our active trading clients, we have decided to introduce bracket orders in 2 phases. This is to ensure a glitch-free implementation of bracket orders and that the execution complexities of the Bracket order mechanism can be dealt with in a systematic manner.

In phase one, the tool will be activated for the equity segment alone which could be for a week and in the following phase, it will be allowed in all the segments including F&Os and Currency Derivatives. In this post, you will understand how to use our various trading platforms to place a Bracket Order. But before that let’s first understand how a Bracket Order functions.

What is a Bracket Order?

It is an OCO (One Cancels Other) order with which you can take a fresh position (either long or short) with a compulsory “stop-loss” and a “target/book-profit” order. Therefore, when the main order is placed (buy or sell) the other two orders (stop-loss and target) will be placed simultaneously.

Bracket Order

So technically, when either a stop-loss or a target price is executed, the other leg of the bracket order gets cancelled automatically. Let’s now look at some of its features:

1.   Compulsory stop-loss and target price:

As mentioned above, while placing a bracket order you need to ensure that depending upon the position a valid stop-loss price and a target/book-profit price is mentioned in the order entry window.

2.   Trailing stop-loss:

In the bracket order, you get an option to activate the trailing stop-loss while placing an order. The trailing stop-loss function helps to keep your stop-loss price moving up/down if the stock price/position moves in the profitable direction. This component is currently disabled and will be introduced in Phase – 2.

3.   Higher leverage/margin:

You can avail a much higher leverage/margin through Bracket Orders. Similar to cover orders, bracket orders have a mandatory stop-loss order which reduces the risk of losing money beyond a point. We’re presently providing 30 times margin for the equity intraday segment and up to 67 times margin for the F&Os intraday segment under the bracket and cover orders. For more details on the leverage available on bracket orders, you can refer to our Margin Calculator.

4.    Can be placed as Limit Order:

Bracket Orders can be placed using only the “Limit Order” product type. It cannot be placed using other types such as Market Order, Stop-loss Limit Order etc. as of now. However, if you wish to place a Buy or Sell order at the market price, then all you need to do is place an order with the limit price above the market for a long position and a limit price below the current market price for a short position. This is to ensure safe risk management practices.

5.    Auto square off:

Bracket orders are basically intraday orders. If a bracket order trade is not squared off by clients before our auto-square off time, it will get automatically squared off at around before the market closes for the day as per our risk management policies.

How to place a Bracket Order?

You can place bracket orders using either of our three trading platforms:

  1. Fyers Web
  2. Fyers One
  3. Fyers Markets

We have kept the user interface very intuitive to make the order placement hassle-free. Now let’s discuss how to place a bracket order for each trading platform separately.

1.    Order placement on Fyers Web:

To place bracket orders on Fyers Web you can choose a scrip on the Watchlist and open the new order entry window. You can use the shortcut keys such as SHIFT+B for Buy order and SHIFT+S for Sell order to access the order entry window instantly. Well, to open the order entry window on Fyers Web there are multiple ways which will be explained in a detailed video tutorial. I will post the link here soon.

I would also like to mention that after taking a constant feedback from our users we have modified the complete user interface of the order entry window on Fyers Web. You can refer to the image below.Order Placement on Fyers Web

2.    Order placement on Fyers One:

To place bracket orders on Fyers One, you can select a script and click F1 for Buy order and F2 for Sell order. You can refer this post to learn order placement on Fyers One. Once the order window pops up on the screen you can refer the image below to understand the functionality.Order Placement on Fyers One

3.    Order placement on Fyers Markets:

In one of our previous blogs on the Cover Order placement, I did mention how to reach to the order entry window on Fyers Markets. Once you reach to the order entry window then you simply need to select the “BO” option from the product type to place a bracket order. You can refer to the image shown below for more clarity,

Order Placement on Fyers MarketOnce you fill up all the details in the order entry form, you can click “Submit” to place the order.

Now let’s discuss the modification and exit methods of the Bracket Order:

1.    Modifying a bracket order:

When it comes to the modification of a bracket order it is slightly different from that of a cover order. This is because a bracket order is more complex as compared to a cover order. We know that there are three positions involved in a bracket order namely,

a.   Primary/main order (Leg -1)

b.  Stop-loss order (Leg -2)

c.  Target/book-profit order (Leg-3)

The main order (Leg -1) is entered when you take a new position either buy or sell using the bracket order product type. As mentioned earlier, this is always entered as a “Limit Order” into the system. Therefore, this order can be modified as long as it gets executed.

On the other hand, the stop-loss (Leg -2) and the target (Leg -3) orders are subject to modification depending upon the status of the main order. What this means is that if the main order is still pending, you cannot modify the stop-loss and the target orders since the Leg -2 & Leg -3 are still not sent to the exchange’s server by the system. However, the stop-loss and target orders can be modified only when the main order gets executed this is because once the primary order gets traded the other two orders (Leg -2 & Leg -3) are sent to the exchange’s server as pending orders.

I have shown this in a simple diagram to make it simple to understand.modifying a bracket order

2.    Exiting a bracket order:

Usually, a bracket order is exited by hitting either a target or a stop-loss order. Needless to say, once either of the orders is executed the other one gets cancelled automatically. However, if a trader wants to manually exit/cancel a bracket order, he can either cancel the target or the stop-loss order from the “Order Book” and the position gets executed at the existing market price.

Considering that the successful implementation of bracket orders has been a challenge for other platforms, we have launched it in the equity intraday segment to begin with. Soon, we will enable it in all the segments and post that we will work on launching Phase 2 of bracket orders. I hope this explanation was helpful. Stay tuned for more updates and happy trading!

If we trade through Bo ,we gave sl & target order.Sometimes if the target is too small both the orders gets executed & we get a short order which we are not able to close.
    How to deal this situation

  • Naman says:

Why can’t I place multiple orders at a time in Fyers web ? Suppose I take a long position, then I can place either stop loss or target, but not both.
Customer support team says I can place only 2 orders at a time. What If I want to trade multiple stocks at a time ?

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Hey Naman, you can place multiple orders. You can place your long entry order, SL and Target in a single order using the Bracket Order functionality. Could you tell me who gave you this wrong information? If you want to place many orders in several different scrips at the same time you can use the basket order functionality on Fyers One.

      Hope this clarifies.

  • VIGNESH says:

BO ORDERS AVAILABLE FOR MCX ALSO AH????

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Nope. So far, only cover orders are available for commodities. We are working on it and will introduce BO for MCX contracts too.

  • Akshay says:

Hey Tejas! This is great. But we are missing Volume Profile. If it’s not freely available, why don’t you introduce a small charge to provide Volume Profile. People who trade it will provide that amount anyday.

  • hitesh says:

    any update on phase 2?

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Last week, we introduced Bracket Orders for derivatives. Post that, we’ll continue with Phase 2. It’s in progress.

  • ANURAG SINHA says:

Every BO is getting rejected. If the Bo is nonfunctional then what is the point of introducing it, when the orders are not going to get executed.

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

      Hi Anurag,

Order rejection can be due to:
      1. Lack of available funds.
      2. Placing the wrong order values.
      3. Placing orders in the disabled product types like F&O.

  • Gurdeep Singh says:

Sir when i can expect Bracket Order phase-2 is launch plss update

  • Gurdeep Arora says:

sir when bracket order phase -2 is launch plsss specify

  • Nitin says:

Hi Murali, I’m Nitin (Fyers’ trader) . Here is a possible solution for your issue :
    1. In Fyers web, first apply your SMA in chart.
    2. Then click on the arrow which you will see near ‘hide-setting-x’ icon buttons of that SMA.(left upper corner of Chart)
    3. Once you click on that arrow, you will get a drop down menu.
    4. Click on ‘Merge down’ option. That’s it.
.. SMA should now shift from candles-chart to below volume (or RSI) chart.
    Hope this should help!

  • Purushotham Gowda says:

For BO order for STOPLOSS and TARGET, we will have to give difference but not the actual price. can we have this corrected in the blog.

  • Prasad says:

    Hi Sir,

When can we expect BO in derivatives.

    Thanks,

  • srinivasan says:

    Sir,

Is the Bracket order for futures enabled now??

  • this is not we wanted, have you seen trigger mechanism in zerodha
you can place and CO or BO as below
if price of scrip goes above price 122 ( let’s say ) then only buy order or if price goes below let’s say 119 then only sell. in short execution of order need one trigger from price. here first of all BO is getting rejected in almost all cases. please put a live video and second there is nothing like trigger orders as i explained in example. PS : I have opened fyers account a long back and just using for charts. because of this all my trades goes to zerodha.

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Hi Saurabh, We have seen the trigger mechanism of all the brokers and we know how it works too. You see, bracket order implementation needs to be glitch free. If we introduce everything at once and if there are issues, you will complain too. Hence, we prefer to take things step by step rather than hurry up just to finish it. There are many complexities which we have to deal with in the back-end. I guess you are not aware of the faulty implementation of other platforms which has caused an uproar in the trading community.

In Phase – 2, we’ll come up with some extra features. I assure you that your feature requests will be implemented.

  • AMIT KUMAR PANDEY says:

sir i have found an issue in fyers web that when we enter in FULLSCREEN mode and try to place an order the order windows doesn’t appear .For placing order we have to switch it back to normal mode.

  • Sandeep Sunkara says:

    Tejas

I have opened FYERS account a month back and still not got the demo on how to use your platforms. I received call three times every time I told the to give me a call before 1:00 pm, if it’s not possible on trading days, I requested them to do it Saturdays. They promised so but never turned up. Today I called customer care, the lady said she will give me call back in 5 minutes and also send me a video link of demo, she didn’t turn up at all. I tried to take delivery of few shares today, but failed to understand how to place a delivery order through FYERS mobile app. I am not sure if your team is really interested in assisting me.

    Thanks
    Sandeep

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

      Hi Sandeep,

I have arranged a call back right now. Apologies for the inconveniences. In the last few months, the trading volumes have spiked at FYERS and the support team was mostly doing just that. However, we have taken measures and hired more support execs to give demos and explain our platform functionalities. Of course, we are interested in you. Every customer is valuable to us.

Update: I just received feedback that your line is busy again. :). We’ll call back in the meanwhile, you can also view our short tutorial videos on youtube using this links – https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCOTK4jjJp97YUFfPzKAfbA

The bracket order update for the android app screwed up the simplified login, the app keeps crashing on the 5 android devices I checked. Already reported this but no action.

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Hi Namit, when did you report the issue? If you have written us an email, send me the ticket number so that we can check the status and revert. We might require more details from you.

  • Ashish says:

its nice to introduce BO .order windows is looks gr8.in previous order window cover 1/2 of the screen.1 problem is once order windows show i can’t draw anything on chat till cancel or placed order.please fix it.please introduce real time price alert on fyers web.its difficult to manage watch maximum stock in one time.no doubt your platform is best now in india. nows days some of the broker platform crash once in a month.so please …

  • amit says:

No other platform offer such a easy way of placing BO. Just put random numbers in stoploss and target and after that adjust it via draging line.
Fyers web is the best web platform and its has a pure graphical interface where we dont have to manually calculate anything like position size, risk reward ratio .
    i love the fyers experience.

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Thank you so much Amit. Yes, we’ll add other functionality soon. Can you spread the word about us? That’ll help a great deal since we don’t advertise to get new customers.

      • amit pandey says:

i always suggest fyers to everyone interested in market both online and offline . And actually its a human nature that if we like something we always tell about it to others. I m from very small town and therefore i rarely found anyone interested in market Otherwise i must have accumulated the largest number of clients for you.
Untill unless i face any major issue with fyers i will always spread postivie words. Currently i m very satisfied with fyers the only thing which i think should be improved is the Backoffice and little bit optimisation of chart loading time.

      • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Amit, the load time of the chart is fast when used on a laptop/desktop. However, when users use the mobile charts with 2G and slow connectivity, it does take about 3 seconds to load. We’ll optimize that too. Reaching out to people these days don’t necessarily have to happen in person you see. I am in Bangalore and I’m interacting with you without knowing what your exact location is. 🙂

      • AMIT KUMAR PANDEY says:

sir i don’t use mobile platform for charting.I feel the chart loading time in fyers web is little bit slow compared to other platform may be due to loading of tools and indicators.
I don’t want to compare you with others ;But for reference if you open zerodha.com and fyers.in side by side you will notice the difference. zerodha site is little bit more optimised and loads fater even in slow connection thats the same difference i feel when i open chart in kite.zerodha.com and trade.fyers.in. Just try you will understand what i m trying to say.

      • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Well ours is a high-quality charting platform which has many charting components. Besides maybe a 1 or 2 seconds delay in the load time you must acknowledge that the data is more accurate. On the web, our charts are super fast. I don’t agree with you in this regards Amit.

  • Sanjay Singh says:

Sir, can we see VTC facility in near future in Fyers.

  • murali says:

    Dear Team,

in fyers web we are not able to take SMA source as volume or RSI, these two developments should available to swing trading. it is available in in.tradingview.com, but not available in fyers web.

kindly make this available as soon as possible ,

    Thanking You.

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Hi Murali, Could you re-phrase your query? I didn’t fully understand what you are trying to say.

    • Nitin says:

Hi Murali, I’m Nitin (Fyers’ trader) . Here is a possible solution for your issue :
      1. In Fyers web, first apply your SMA in chart.

  • Suresh Kumar says:

Its definitely a great and valuable news for Fyers customers, thank you for considering the customers request.
I have a question though, can we have the price and pips option as shown in first paragraph of this article(Order placement on Fyers Web). Im not able to see pips option in the Fyers web, only price option is there. With pips we had the advantage of mentioning 20 or 50 or 100 as stop loss in CO orders whether buy / sell which is more convenient than adding / subtracting from LTP and entering as whole price.

Thank you for building this wonderful and stable platform.

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Hi Suresh, Firstly thanks for appreciating us. We had the pips functionality in our previous order window but it caused confusion to many traders since it is a new concept in India. Hence, we have temporarily disabled it. In Bracket Orders we have introduced the point based target / SL order entry. If you have any doubts, do get in touch with our team as mentioned here – https://fyers.in/contact-us/

  • nag says:

Please introduce Bracket order with SL/SLM order facility. You have a great platform in place. Please get this feature ASAP.I have been requesting this feature for an year or so.No idea why it takes so much time to introduce this feature. Many are sick of the platform ,instability issues of your competitors platform(namely rodha n stox).Get the basic feature and en-cash their situations.

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Hi Nag, I’m finally back & attending to the comments on our blog posts. Yes, we intend to launch Bracket Orders with SL/SL-M features in Phase-2. The reason we wanted to do it in 2 phases is to ensure the smooth implementation of the basic functionalities. We have so far received positive feedback from traders. Well, I don’t want to comment on the situation of our competitors when they are having a bad time. We will focus on our agenda of making our platform more robust with each passing day.

      • nag says:

Great. Thanks for taking time to reply. Just wanted to know if you have any specific dates for Phase-2 roll-out. We really need these features to trade certain trade plans/Ideas.

      • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Nag, We can’t put a finger on a timeline right now. Our next focus is to launch MCX and post that we will get back to working on Phase 2.

  • Purushotham Gowda says:

The blog says that you have option of price and pips however on my account(fyers web) it does not price and pips, when i called customer care they are saying you can only place order only in terms of pips. on live market by the time i calculate the pips, i would have lost the opportunity. so my request is to roll out a fix so that we can use price instead of pips

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Hi Purushotham, While placing bracket orders, the target price and stop loss should be based on the number of rupees as opposed to the absolute price. For instance, If you enter a long trade using BO in reliance at 1250 and want to keep a target at 1260 and a stop loss at 1245, you will have to enter the target value as 10 and stop loss value at 5. This is not too hard. Also, you can modify these orders by simply using the drag and drop functionality on the charts on Fyers Web.

      Hope this clarifies.

  • amit says:

in previous version we were allowed to draw on charts even when ORDER WINDOW is open BUT now after opening order window we can’t do anything untill the order is placed or cancelled.

    can you fix this issue?

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Yes, another trader has reported this and I have forwarded this to the UX team. It will be done in the near future Amit.

  • SR says:

Hi..pls enable trigger price in BO as well as that will enable us to buy / sell based on the stock reaching specific price. Thanks.

  • SONI KUMARI says:

    Congrats team FYERS
Great sir waiting for this desperately…
Please update option strategy builder… very useful tool for us.

    • Pratik Parthe Pratik Parthe says:

Thanks for the appreciation. Going forward will surely bring up more innovation in our platforms.

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

@SONI KUMARI, We will take this up once all our existing pipeline of developments have been successfully completed. Yes, I do agree that a strategy builder is very useful and we had one on our website. The reason we disabled it is because we wanted to focus on one thing at a time and make each of the things we launch work properly rather than juggling too much.

      Hope this clarifies.

  • Ankita says:

Its great news that BO is live now on Fyers Platform, thanks tonne for that.
I have a query how many times I can modify my Target and stoploss i.e Leg 2 and Leg 3?

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Hi Ankita, You can modify Leg 2 and Leg 3 any number of times without any restrictions. Order modification on the chart is very seamless on Fyers Web as you can drag and drop the target and stop loss very easily. Try it out.

  • vatsal mittal says:

Best news from FYERS especially for those who use technical analysis. I’m finally glad BO got released.

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Hi Vatsal, Glad you like it! We look forward to implementing more features soon. Stay tuned!

  • Bhavik Mehta says:

This one feature was missing and now, finally, all the features are available in the platform which makes FYERS, the best trading platform. Thank you FYERS team for the update.

  • Maaya says:

thank fyers for the much-needed update, now its all very convenient to trade with fyers

  • srishti says:

    simple to understand for beginers

  • You guys r awesome. Congratulations & thanks a ton for implementing “BO”.
    Please incorporate below points –
    1) SL & Target price should come automatically while placing 1st leg. We can modify SL & Target prices later after exicuated of 1st leg as modification facility already provided. This will help to quick entry for day trader.

    2) Provide “repet same order” tab or (right click) option. for example – i trade my full Quantity in 2 parts, example – 1st part of 100 shares & 2nd part of 100 shares. For Both- Entry & SL levels will be same but I will exit 1st part at 1st Target & 2nd part at 2nd Target or Trail it.

    3) Provide pre-defined order Quantity.

Thanks a lot for removing “pips” from order window.

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Hi Sandip, I hope it was worth the long wait.

      1. Yes, you can modify the second and third leg. It is already incorporated.

      2. You can just enter 2 different trades using Bracket orders. It’s as simple as that and the second and third leg of the 2 trades are shown seperately anyways.

      3. This is something that will take time. We are receiving a lot of feedback on user preferences and they’re not the same. We’ll think about how to achieve this later.

Pips is something that some traders really want. The flipside of reaching out to everyone for feedback is that more often than not, we end up with much more feedback that we can accommodate at any one given point in time. 🙂

Hi Karthik, Thanks for your feedback. I didn’t know Bracket Orders would take the No. 1 spot! So far we have received good feedback on the implementation. We will launch this for derivatives next week and thereafter start working on Phase – 2.

  • Sakthi says:

Waiting for the Bracket Order for a long time. Finally BO had been launched in FYERS.

(Bracket Orders can be placed using only the “Limit Order” product type. It cannot be placed using other types such as Market Order, Stop-loss Limit Order etc. as of now). That means can we expect bracket order entry using stoploss limit order in phase 2 ?

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Yes, as mentioned in the blog and in other comments we will introduce that in Phase – 2.

  • Dhanish says:

If leg 2 or leg 3 order get fully executed in 10 attempts. How will the brokerage be calculated?
20+20=40 or 20+20*10(200) will be charged?

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

If it gets executed in 10 different orders, the charges will be ₹20 * 10 = ₹200/-.

But that rarely happens to derivative traders because most trade with fewer lots.

    • stoploss and target should be in absolute value only.

Terms .. absolute value, actual value etc are confusing. Give example with screen shot.. I have tried it .. we should use the difference (target-entry price) and (sl price – entry price) for placing the order.

if you buy a stock at 100 and want to sell at 110 and stoploss 95 then at target you to put 10 and at stoploss 5.

@Murali Vasudevan, As mentioned in the post we have enabled it for Equity segment for now. We intend to introduce in other segments next week onwards. Nope, we have introduced a functionality based on rupees rather than absolute values. However, you can modify the orders based on your preferred target and stop loss by simply using the drag and drop functionality on Fyers Web.
