How Time & Sales (T&S) is useful for traders

Time and sales (T&S) is a real-time filter and mostly useful for serious day traders and jobberswho want to observe significant trades to prioritize those price levels and trade accordingly in the market. We are privileged to announce that FYERS is the only brokerage to launch Time and Sales widget on our web platform.

Analysing the flashing stock quotes and making rational trading decisions, is an imperative skill that every day trader needs to focus on. Retail traders know much more about using indicatorseffectivelywhile trading but, very few have an idea about how to trade with real-time quotes and volume of trades. It is not humanly possible to observe all trades without a filter. That’s when Time & Sales window is very useful.

Time and sales window is a detailed-sequential log of the tradesexecuted inthe chosen scrip. It gives the crucial trade data such astraded prices, volumes traded with time stamps. This information is crucial to identify the short-term trend in the chosen scrip.

How effective is the Time and Sales Filter?

The time and sales window is the most detailed portrayal of a market’s trading information. Usually, graphical charts are used to provide an overview of a market’s price movement. However, some trading styles like intraday trading, jobbing, scalping and high-frequency trading require more detailed information about the market. The time and sales window can be used to observe the minute details of a market’s price action, and since the graphical and data-driven methods are often complementary to each other.

T&S is a real-time display a variety of information for each executed trade like:

Price – Price at which trade executed.

Volume – No. of contracts/shares traded in the period.

Time – Date and time at which trade executed.

Direction – Price movement compared to the previous period.

Therefore, Time & Sales filters are a vital part of professional technical analysts.

For example, time and sales data would indicate that at 11:42:22 on the NIFTY exchange for XYZ Bank script 500 shares were traded at ₹ 678.45 and at 11:42:23 traded with 500 shares at ₹ 678.3.

Time and sales data can be accessed via the Fyers Web trading platform and can be accessed form the right click functionality. The window displays a running tally of trades of a stock in a table format. The degree to which T&S indicator is effective depends upon the direction element, which often causes much of the confusion for new traders.  The reason for this confusion is, every trade is executed when buyers and sellers are available at a particular price point otherwise, there wouldn’t be any trade. If there are both a buyer and a seller, how can be labelled as either buying or selling trade?

The direction of a trade is decided on the basis of how it affects the current market price. If a trade helps the market price to move up, then the trade is labelled as a buying trade. Contrary, if a trade helps the market price to move down, then the trade is labelled as a selling trade. Based upon this data one can make a wise decision to enter into the trade, as it assists in finding out the demand and supply area in the script. Moreover, the filter option enables to analyse the previous trades and understand the demand / supply sentiment of the market and to ascertain if there is either buying or selling at precise price points.

Traders follow a number of indicators and tools to decide either to buy or sell a particular share amongst the thousands of the trading scrips. In general, technical analystsuse graphical charts, charting patterns and depth of market along with the time &sales data. This gives a broader view of the price and volume trends. Also, you need to be aware of the trading activity around support and resistance levels using time & sales filteras these crucial price levels are important for intraday traders.T&S is primarily used by very short-term& intraday traders, scalpers and high frequency traders who represents the shortest-term style of trading and attempts to skim many small profits from a large number of trades throughout the trading day, since, these traders believe it’s easier to make and be profitable from small moves in stock prices rather than from large moves.

    Hi Tejas,

When can we expect CPR indicator by KGS on Fyers One and Web Mobile too.

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Hi Alok, Some indicators available on TradingView will take sometime or will not be available on our web platform. We encourage you to subscribe to their pro versions to access all features. In the alternative, we are working on something that will be a good value-add in that regard. Will keep you posted in our upcoming blog post.

    @Tejas Khoday
Time & Sales doesn’t work as it supposed to.
    1. Time, Qty and price is not auto refresh hence need to refresh feeds manually (switch tab to ‘Market Depth’ and come back to T&S)
    2. Tape needs to be sorted in descending so the latest order will be on top
    3. No color coding available for buy/sell orders (Time, Qty & Price row), It is difficult to check manually
Please consider this small changes and update. Thanks.

Hello, So have been requesting you to add pine script for some time now. But here i see that you have mentioned that that feature is available exclusively to the Trading View members. May be it is possible in the future to add it to Fyers web . Mean while, you have also mentioned that the API is provided and that one can code their own strategies and place orders via the Amibroker language and API in conjunction.
I have seen the documentation of the API and do some basic coding in AFL. Can u please provide a small sample code of a simple crossover strategy and show how to place a cover order? Or a resource on the web with a reference to the same?

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Hi Manish, Hi PIncescript is exclusively available to TradingView members, that’s right. Yes, you can use our API to place orders based on your trading strategies signals. We don’t provide AFL codes. You may have to get in touch with someone who does. There is an Amibroker community out there that will be willing to help with AFL codes. The API docs have all the required details w.r.t order placement. You can check it out here – https://api-docs.fyers.in/v1

I am Fyers customer, following features can be added to T&S Widget,
    1. Highlight the orders in different colours which were executed @Bid or @Ask…to get insight of buyers/sellers aggression

  • Avatar Manoj Joshi says:

In continuation to my earlier post, the customization of the Consolidation candles is already a feature in Tradingview platform. so it should be easy to incorporate that in Fyers Web !!

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Not all features will be the same Manoj. We haven’t yet started working on that and they haven’t provided that to third-parties.

Stay tuned. It may happen in the future but we don’t know yet.

      • Avatar Manoj Joshi says:

        Hello Tejas,

I saw a youtube video by Mr. Surjeet Kakkar on the features of Tradingview platform, wherein he said it is possible to build that logic, provided the service provider allows that….In this case Fyers is the service provider so it should be very much possible for your technical team to build this feature….It would go a long way in improving the features that Fyers Web provides !!

Hope you would consider this more practically for the benefit of your subscribers !!

      • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Hey Manoj, There are some features on TradingView that are exclusively available on their website alone. One of them is Pinescript; a scripting language that can be used to code your own indicators or strategies. Currently, we provide API. You can code your trading strategies using Python, Java or a platform such as Amibroker and use the API to place orders.

  • Avatar Manoj Joshi says:

    Hello Tejas,

Can you enable customizing of the “Basing/Boring/Consolidation candles” on the Fyers web charts. Typically, these are the candles where the body is 50% or less than the total length of the wick. It would be a simple mathematical formula, that can do the trick and help us colour code such candles.

      1. Traditional
      2. Fibonacci
      3. Woodie
      4. Classic
      5. DeMark
      6. Camarilla

For more information about each of these, you can read this post – https://fyers.in/introducing-pivot-points-on-fyers-web/. Pinescript is a coding language that is exclusive to TradingView and they do not provide it to third parties.

      • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

We have developed indicators based on popular demand. So far, not many have asked for this. We’ve taken note of it for future developments.

Hi Gauhar Singh, We haven’t received this request before, so it’s not a priority at the moment.

  • Avatar Gauhar Singh says:

Will there be a color coding in the future to know if the transaction was done on the bid(red), offer(green) or in between (white) to get a better feel for how the transactions are being done ?

    • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

Yeah, it’s a feature for the future. We’ve taken note of this. Thanks for your feedback Gauhar.

      • Avatar Gauhar Singh says:

Is there an expected date for when this feature will be live ?

      • Tejas Khoday Tejas Khoday says:

        It is already live.

      • Avatar Rahul Sandanshiv says:

Hi @Tejas – I don’t see the color coding in the T&S window. Is it visible only during trading hours? It is a fantastic feature but difficult to catch without color coding.

      • Avatar Rahul Sandanshiv says:

Hi @Tejas – I see High, Low and LTP (On left bottom corner) have been color coded. Can we see the colored row i.e. LTP, Qty and Time.
Sorry about asking too much but this was necessary. Thanks for considering our requests and acting on it. Appreciated.

      • Avatar Gauhar Singh says:

  • Avatar Mohammed Hanif Shaikh says:

    Hello Tejas,

I have veirfied the said filter and find it very useful. This information will be helpful while trading and brief information of first five entries of buy and sales under DOM. Further few days back on another platform, I have requessted you to introduce the values of stock, previous close, open, high low, etc. to determine GAP Up and GAP DOWN openings, which I find all the particulars here.
Values are captured/changing/moving as per latest values.

Only some points needs correction : –

    1. LTT dated is mentioned as 23 Jun 2019 instead of 23 Jul 2019 ( however time is correct) and
    2. Upper and Lower circuit values. (This is in my opinion based on information from my freinds)

Thanks and regards for providing such useful tool.
