While the media focuses on economic growth rates, Jean Dreze and Amartya Sen focus on how the popular opinion is biased, making the country look more like oases in the midst of the burning desert sands. It’s about how India’s economy has achieved rapid growth over the years and yet it lacks severely behind in the scale of social indicator of living standards. The authors show how this is true even when compared with countries whom India has been overtaking in terms of economic growth. They draw comparisons of India with Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Pakistan and the Sub Saharan African countries whose populations are known to have among the lowest standards of living in the world.
The book discusses various socio-economic facts since the British colonial era.The empirical research reveals some appalling facts about India. If you want to learn about per capita income, distribution of income, poverty, nutritional standards, life expectancy, infant mortality etc. The book also discusses the government’s’ role and the measures which have contributed to the development or the lack of it.

This is a very impressive article. I would definitely be reading this.
A well-written blog. Will surely go through it once.
It’s a good book if you’re into the macro scene and recent financial history.
Amartya Sen is actually not that pessimistic but he has always been skeptical about the markets/economy.
Hmmm..
I saw this in a library and to be honest this amartya sen is a boring man with a boring way of writing.
Amartya Sen is a F****n pessimist!
If amartya sen is an idiot then you’re not even human.
Amartya sen is an idiot and a pessimist who only writes and does nothing.
Tejas why don’t you post reviews of more new books. This was before 2000.
Selvam, I like reading books which are more ancient. It helps in understanding why the world is the way it is today. I do read new books but don’t have the same amount of time as I used to before.. 🙂

Hi Mr. Tejas Khoday, do you suggest this book over other books of Amartya Sen?
I’m not a big fan of Amartya Sen so haven’t read others. I picked this one up cos of the content he chose to write about.
Thanks Tejas..
🙂
